If you’ve noticed a change in your breast tissue, like a lump or skin changes, it’s important to get a more detailed evaluation. A diagnostic mammogram is used when a screening mammogram shows abnormalities or when you experience symptoms like pain, nipple discharge, or a palpable lump. This breast imaging exam provides a clearer, more focused view of the breast tissue to help detect potential issues, offering peace of mind or confirming the need for further investigation. At Element Medical Imaging, we offer mammograms across Kansas City that use the latest technology for precise results and an accurate diagnosis.

Diagnostic Mammogram Exam Explanation

A diagnostic mammogram involves a more detailed series of X-ray radiology, often with additional views, to help the radiologist assess the area in question. For women with dense tissue or areas of concern, 3D mammography provides a more accurate view of the breast. Breast radiology specialists utilize these advanced techniques to ensure the highest accuracy in diagnosing potential issues.

When do you need a diagnostic mammogram?

If you notice any changes in your breasts, such as a new lump, pain, or nipple discharge, or if your screening mammogram detects an abnormality, your doctor will recommend a diagnostic mammogram. This more thorough exam allows doctors to better understand what’s happening and whether any further treatment is necessary. Women with a personal history of breast cancer should also consider diagnostic mammograms regularly to monitor for any new developments. Approximately 10% of women are called back from screening mammograms for additional testing. This percentage is slightly higher for women 40-49 years of age, but advances in technology – like 3D mammography have improved sensitivity in younger women. Most diagnostic mammograms conclude with normal results, but it is necessary in order to complete the mammographic evaluation and make an accurate diagnosis. In some cases a biopsy or follow-up test in 6 months may be advised.

How do you prepare for the diagnostic mammogram exam?

On the day of the diagnostic mammogram exam, do not wear powder, deodorant, lotion or perfume under your arms or on your breasts. These substances can cause artifacts on your mammogram, making the images harder to interpret. Deodorant will be available to you after your exam. Wear two-piece clothing so that you only have to remove your top and bra for the examination. To help minimize discomfort during your exam, schedule your diagnostic mammogram during the two weeks following your menstrual cycle (when breasts are less tender). Please bring any pertinent history to your appointment: prior surgeries, hormone use, family or personal history of breast cancer.

What should you expect?

Your diagnostic mammogram will be performed by a mammography-certified, female technologist. After you check in, you will be escorted to a private dressing room, where you will be asked to undress from the waist up. You will be given a gown that opens in the front. The technologist will ask you several questions, so she can better understand your history and/or any problems you may be having.

At Element Medical Imaging a board certified radiologist will review your exam results with you and explain any further recommendations. Your primary care physician will receive the results of your exam within 48 hours of your visit. If you have had a previous screening or diagnostic mammograms at another healthcare imaging facility, please let us know so that we may obtain these images. It is extremely important for the radiologist to have your prior films for comparison, as it enhances the doctor’s ability to detect a subtle change or small abnormality on your current mammogram. Availability of prior images at your appointment also decreases the length of time it takes for you to get your results.

Mammogram Benefits and Risks

While screening mammograms are great for routine checks, diagnostic mammograms provide more clarity when issues arise. Advances in 3D breast imaging ensure greater sensitivity, improving the detection of breast cancer. However, the exam may require additional imaging or a biopsy if a concerning finding is identified. Always discuss your results with your doctor to understand the next steps in your care.
