A Smarter Screening for Dense Breast Tissue
For women with dense breast tissue, a Fast Breast MRI offers a more sensitive screening option than mammography, increasing the chances of detecting cancers that may not be visible on a traditional 3D mammogram. As a low-cost, self-pay exam, it provides an accessible solution for those seeking additional peace of mind beyond standard screenings. By offering enhanced imaging without the need for compression or radiation, Fast Breast MRI empowers women to take a proactive approach to their breast health.
What Is a Fast Breast MRI?
A Fast Breast MRI is a streamlined version of a traditional breast MRI, designed to capture fewer images in less time while still providing valuable insights.
This screening exam is available to all patients and serves as an important supplement to mammography, especially for those at above-average risk for breast cancer. Based on your screening mammogram results, your Element Medical Imaging radiologist may recommend a Fast Breast MRI for further evaluation.
- Self-pay exam (requires a physician referral)
- Cost: $450
What to Expect on Exam Day
Your appointment will take approximately 30 minutes. For the most accurate results, schedule your exam 7–10 days after the start of your menstrual cycle to minimize false positives due to hormonal changes.
Unlike a mammogram, a Fast Breast MRI does not require breast compression, so you won’t experience discomfort.
Preparing for Your Exam
- Check-in and Paperwork – Upon arrival, you'll complete a brief medical history form.
- Changing Room – You’ll change into a gown and remove jewelry to prevent interference with the MRI machine.
- Scan Process – A female technologist will position you on the MRI table, lying on your stomach with your arms above your head. You’ll enter the machine headfirst.
- Contrast Injection – Most patients receive an intravenous injection of gadolinium contrast material to enhance image clarity.
- During the Scan – You'll need to lie still, breathe normally, and relax. The procedure is painless.
There are no known side effects from an MRI, so you can resume normal activities immediately afterward.
Important Notes
- Avoid eating a large meal before your exam.
- Bring prior breast imaging (mammograms, ultrasounds, MRIs) if they were performed at a facility other than Element Medical Imaging centers.
